Blog to Another Baby

Same song, second verse. My second pregnancy resulted in a boy. I still need somewhere to write, and this blog is for thoughts, feelings, and observations regarding DS2.

Spit Up Happens

DS2 spit up quite a bit this morning. By "quite a bit" I mean that he needed a new outfit, the blanket got tossed in the hamper, and I have on a different shirt. In the past his has just dribbled out of the corner of his mouth. This one was more forceful, but definitely just spitting up, not vomitting. I guess he didn't want to nurse anymore after all. He was rooting and sucking, so I thought he was still hungry. I guess he just needed to keep sucking. He finally fell asleep after I held him standing up (instead of sitting down).

Night Habits

When "they" tell you every pregnancy and every child are different, "they" are right. DS2 only woke twice to eat last night. The first time his diaper was barely wet (after 3 hours), and the second time, it was dry (3 hours later). This morning (2 hours later) it was barely wet again. And we use cloth, so I can actually tell when it is barely wet vs. really dry. During the day he soaks diapers much more quickly, but this is quite a change from DS1. But I have to keep reminding myself that at "this age" DS1 was still in the hospital and on a feeding and diapering schedule.

Mothering Magazine -- And Baby Makes Four - Surviving the Addition of Baby #2

Checkup

DS2 had his (almost) 2 week well-baby checkup this morning. He has gained back the 12 ounces that he lost the first 3 days while in the hospital, and then some. He's 8 lbs 15 ozs and 20 1/4 inches. (That's 1 1/4 inches longer, too.) He looks healthy all around, and even made a fresh diaper sample for the doctor to see. :-)

One week old

DS2 is a week old today. He nurses well and sleeps well, too. Last night I woke him up to change his diaper and feed him. I can lay him down after he falls asleep nursing, and he usully will stay asleep for an hour or so. That's very different than DS1. But DS1's first month was very different. DS2 is going to get his first at-home bath today. A layer of his skin is starting to rub off in places, so we probably should haven bathed him a couple of days ago.

It's a boy!

DS #2 was born at 6:06 pm on Thursday September 11, 2003. He was 8 lbs, 10 oz, and 19 inches long. Mom and baby are both fine and home now.

I'm dilated just a little more than last week, to 3 cm, but not much else has changed. When talking with my doctor, I reminded him that we want to use the due date from the ultrasound (9/12) not the calculated one from LMP (9/9). We argeed to a biophysical profile this week and a consultation with the OB. The current plan is that if the biophysical profile (which is scheduled for Thursday) looks fine, then we'll schedule a c-section for next Monday (3 day past my due date). I'm okay with that, and he is too. DH is pretty nervous about waiting that long, though.

Still waiting

We're still a family of 3, for now. Saturday we tried a natural labor stimulant (which was emotionally and physically satisfying), but it didn't get contractions started. Today we'll find out if it did anything to get my cervix more ready because I have a checkup in a few minutes. I anticipate a not very fun conversation about scheduling a c-section, but I'm trying to not stress over it, to keep my blood pressure down.

Glorious sleep

Last night was wonderful. I woke up this morning when DH's alarm was going off around 7. Not only did DS sleep all night, but so did I! It's the first time in weeks that I haven't made a night bathroom visit. I'm not sure, but I think I didn't even roll over during the night.

39 weeks

My checkup went fine this morning. I'm measuring right on target at 39. My weight was up 2 pounds from last week. My bp was a bit elevated at 150/90, but that's where it was sitting before I got back on my medicine. I don't have any (other) pre-eclampsia symptoms and my doctor is not particularly concerned yet. I asked him to do an internal check and we found that I am dilated to 2 and about 80% effaced. He said that was very encouraging! The baby's head and my cervix are low. (It didn't feel like he was reaching for my tonsils during the exam like last time. :-)

We are expecting and hoping that I will go into labor on my own, of course. However, we did schedule another checkup for Monday 9/8. At which point we will set a date for a scheduled c-section (since induction is out this time). We could choose to have it the next day, or wait several more days. My doctor has 9/9 in my chart as my "calculated" due date, but I reminded him that that date was based on a guessed LMP. The ultrasound due date in my chart is 9/12, so right now I'm personally leaning toward Monday 9/15 if I don't have the baby before then. If we do choose a date that is past 9/12, he will probably want me to have a biophysical profile done, and he might want one if we select a date after 9/9.

Night wakings

I think my body is trying to get me used to waking every 2-3 hours to feed the new baby. Last night, for the 2nd night in a row, I woke up around 3am, completely wide awake (although still very tired), hungry, and somewhat fidgity. I tried sleeping on the recliner, drinking some chocolate milk, and even playing computer games. DS woke up shortly after I got out of bed, and after I took care of him I was ready to sleep again. This is also the second night in a row that my right eye has been very watery and matted a bit when I awoke. I really would like to get rid of my cold or whatever it is before the new baby comes!
